What is Lumega-Z?

Lumega-Z is a medical food, a special class of products designed to protect against a specific disease or condition. In fact, Lumega-Z is the only medical food that meets the FDAs criteria for replenishment and restoration of the macular pigment. It was developed by a team of internationally renowned scientists who have studied macular health and macular carotenoids for 40 years.

Most importantly, unlike other formulas, Lumega-Z contains not just lutein and zeaxanthin but also the critical carotenoid meso-zeaxanthin, which has been left out of many other formulas.

The three carotenoids work together to provide adequate blue-light blocking and disarm and neutralize free radicals in the retina. When one carotenoid is missing from a medical food or supplement, the other two do not function as efficiently or provide the optimal therapeutic benefit.

Lumega-Z is chock-full of other ingredients shown to promote ocular health and visual performance, including:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamins B3, B6, and B12
  • Vitamin D3
  • Thiamin
  • Folate
  • Biotin
  • Pantothenic
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Lycopene
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Copper
  • Manganese
  • Chromium
  • Molybdenum
  • NAC
  • Acetyl-L-Camitine
  • Quercetin
  • CoQ10
  • Astaxanthin

Because of the wide range of nutrients it contains, Lumega-Z can replace a daily multivitamin and other supplements. It also comes with Omega Boost, a separate supplement that provides essential omega fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

Unlike other products currently available on the market, Lumega-Z comes in a tasty liquid formula that is easy to swallow and digest. Because of the way it is manufactured, the ingredients in Lumega-Z are delivered very efficiently to blood stream and into the macula. (See the absorption graph below. Lumega-Z releases four times the amount of carotenoids into the blood stream as the AREDS2 gel caps formula.)

Taken once a day, you can mix Lumega-Z with water, juice or your beverage of choice. The product does not contain sugar, gluten, dairy or artificial colors.

Lumega-Z is only available under the supervision of a professional healthcare provider. When ordering Lumega-Z, you must provide your eye doctors DAC number, or Doctor Authorization Code.

How Lumega Z Works

Learn about the macular pigment and how important it is for ocular health and staving off eye diseases, such as macular degeneration. Also learn how Medical Foods, which include carotenoids, can restore the macular pigment.

About Ocular Nutrition

Studies confirm what doctors have believed for years: getting the right nutrients can help us avoid diseases that threaten our vision, including age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Omega 3, coQ10, and vitamins B, C, D and E are now well-established as some of the most eye-friendly nutrients.

A special type of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients called carotenoids, are particularly important to ocular health, as they protect the health of the eyes cells and preserve visual performance.

The carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin are found in leafy greens like spinach, kale and broccoli as well as other foods like eggs. In contrast, the carotenoid meso-zeaxanthin is not commonly found in nature. Unless it is provided through supplementation, it has to be produced in the eye from lutein and zeaxanthin. As we age, this production process becomes very inefficient, making meso-zeaxanthin supplementation even more critical.

How Carotenoids Work

Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin are organic pigments that make up the macular pigment. This protective pigment layer covers the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for detailed vision.

The carotenoids that make up the macular pigment have two important functions. First, they block and absorb harmful UV radiation that threatens the health and function of the eyes. Think of them like sunglasses, only worn inside your eyes.

Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin also protect against oxidative and inflammatory damage in the macula and retina. As potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, these carotenoids have the important task of clearing out waste and preventing it from accumulating in the back of the eye.

The amount of carotenoids in the macula is measured in terms of macular pigment optical density (MPOD); that is, the density of macular pigment. Not only is macular pigment optical density a biomarker for predicting eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration, it has also recently been identified as a possible biomarker for neurogenerative disorders like Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. Consequently, a healthy macular pigment is important both for the prevention of vision loss from macular degeneration as well as for overall cognitive health and quality of life.

Unfortunately for most people, our daily diets don't provide enough of the nutrients our eyes need but medical foods like Lumega-Z can. By taking Lumega-Z, you provide the necessary support for macular and retinal health to help stave off vision loss from sight-stealing diseases like macular degeneration.
